Beginner Guide to Candle Magic

Using candles with ritual can add strength and ambiance. All the colors have different spiritual meanings and can help with different types of spells, so if you’re using candles to aid in your spell, it’s best to understand the energies and meanings of each color.

When you go into a craft store, you’ll find all shape, size and colored canc

White- white is one of the most basic of colors. They work for purity and cleansing but can work with all types of spells with other candles. I add them into all my spell kits and all my personal rituals.

Black- in general, black is the anti-curse/anti-hex color. You use it for breaking any kind of darker magic someone has used against you, it can be used as protection against negative energies as well as banishing (entity as well as negative emotions/energies you’re trying to get rid of.) You can use black and white together as a way of doubling the cleansing and protection powers in a spell.

Green– this is the color used in financial luck and money related spells. It’s also good for a fertile crop, abundance in more than finances and luck in your marriage, or any kind of growth.

Purple– Purple is considered a royal color in general. It is used in spells to gain wisdom as well as divination.

Blue- Blue is a healing color, it’s used to chase away bad energies and depressed moods.

Red- Red is a color of passion, life, death, anger, rage, blood and love. It’s generally lust and anger and can be used for banishing, love spells, sex magick or blood magick.

Pink- Pink is kind of a feminine and baby version of red. You use pink for femininity, lust and love spells, fertility and any time you need a color to represent the feminine.

Yellow- Yellow is typically a color of happiness, joy, motivation, vitality and inspiration/finding your muse.

There are many other colors with magical properties, but these are some of the main colors with their magical uses.

The next thing to look at are if you want to use scents. You can use unscented and burn incense but you can also use candles with earthy or other scents.

You don’t have to use scents at all but using certain scents do help with adding to the atmosphere and feel and can help with adding the energies associated with the scent.

There are different shapes, sizes and styles of candles. Most don’t really have any significance but if you want to burn through a full candle, finding a small tea light may help. If you want to reuse, pillar or tapered candles can be beneficial.

When you’re done, don’t blow candles out- snuff them or let them burn fully out.

Beginner Guide to Protection Magick

Protective and cleansing magick is probably the first type of magick that should be learned. It helps cleanse an area to prepare for a serious ritual, it helps offer protection while getting ready to divine or cast a spell and it helps prepare a new living space.

When you gain enough experience, you can even perform cleansings and protection on friends and family members.

Here are a few basics that I personally have used and what I have used them for.

Materials

The materials you choose to use can vary widely. You may not even have any special on you, but there are things you can use around your home.

Salt- I personally use sea salt, but if you have table salt, that can work fine as well.

Black salt- same as regular salt, both work. Black salt helps keep away unwanted energies

Sage- smudge sticks and incense or candles can all be used to purify and cleanse. You set the sage stick (smudge stick) on fire, then let the fire put itself out, while it’s smoking you walk around the area you’re wanting to cleanse.

Moving in to a New House

When I move into a new house or apartment, I always make sure to lay salt out around the door and along all window frames. I personally use sea salt, but even table salt can work. Lay out black salt at the front and back doors, windows and front gate to keep negative energies and intentions out.

Before moving stuff in, take a smudge stick light one side, let it burn out until it’s smoking then walk around the inside and outside of the house slowly while letting the smoke move around the areas you’re walking.

One tip I got from a Feng Shui book is to go into any hardly used corners (or any corners where the energies feel stagnant) and clap. The clapping helps move energy and take it from stale to active.

Personal Protections

If you’re getting ready to practice a spell, perform a ritual, communicate with the other side or any other form of the craft, take some salt (sea or black works well) and lay it out in a counterclockwise area. Place candles around the circle and light them counterclockwise to banish any negative energies or forces trying to get in your way)
If you want to banish negativity, go counter and if you’re trying to bring on positive energies, go clockwise.

Take a smudge stick/candle (sage is the most well known and most used), start walking clockwise to banish then turn and walk clockwise to bring on protective energies. Do your spell/ritual or divination within the circle.

Protective Rituals for Others

Create the circle with the person you’re protecting sitting in the center. Walk around the person counterclockwise to ward off negative then clockwise with a white candle to bring on the protective energies.

End the ritual when it feels right.

Always remember, when you’re putting out candles, make sure you snuff the candle and don’t blow.

I’ll be doing more later about protective magick. What do you do or use for protection when you’re casting a spell?

Setting Up Your First Alter Part 1

This is going to be one of the most important and personal choice you make when practicing. You’ll need to decide what type of alter, how you store everything and how to display it if you want to display. You may choose to hide it in a room in your home that visitors don’t visit or you may keep it out in the open. I personally store everything in an old antique table a family friend gave me. I can hide it, keep my kids from accessing it and I know where everything is.

You will want to find storage– it could be a plastic tub or it could be an old wood antique box, that doesn’t matter outside of aesthetics.

You will also need to decide what types of tools you’ll want to use. Candle magick is one of the simplest and more common. All you need is a supply of candles of different shapes, types and colors. Common colors

  1. Purple is used for wisdom
  2. Blue- healing, fighting sadness/depression or bringing peace
  3. Green is used in healing, health, money and success spells.
  4. Pink- love, relationships in general (friendships), it’s used to invoke feminine energies
  5. Red- passion, love, vitality, fertility and can be used to banish negativity
  6. White- protection, cleansing, divining and communicating with the deceased
  7. Black- lifting curses, banishing negative entities or energy, purification and some health (banishing a cold or symptoms of chronic illness)

After determining the types of spells you’ll practice (you may want to stock up for any and all types), you will need to determine the sizes. There isn’t any significance with sizes and shapes, so that would be a personal preference, although sometimes you find specially molded candles in shapes of gods, goddesses or symbols. Even then, all you would really need are tapered, pillar, jar, votive or tea lights.

The last thing to consider- do you want primarily unscented or scented candles? I would suggest a mixture of both, but with earthy scents. Some scents promote psychic energies, relaxation and sage is good for cleansing. Burning a sage scented candle can work just as well as smudging, if you don’t have a smudge stick available.

Dragons blood is good to work with in any form. You can use scented candles, incense or dragon’s blood ink. Dragon’s blood incense smells amazing and is added to increase the energy you put into your spell work. It makes the energies more intense.

Incense is another item on your list. It’s normally a good idea to stock up on different earthy scents to help enhance your spells. Different scents help with different emotions or energies- dragon’s blood is considered to help

Some common scents that are used to enhance spells

  1. Dragon’s blood
  2. Sandal wood
  3. Lavender
  4. Sage
  5. Peppermint
  6. Other earthy scents work well as well

An alter cloth is next on the list. You can make one or buy one. It’s typically used as decoration and to protect the surface of the alter. You could also get one that serves both to protect the alter and provide divination

The divination tools are next. Decide what form(s) of divination you’re wanting to practice and make sure to get the tools you will need for those. If you’re wanting to read tarot, get at least one set of tarot cards. Most people say the first deck needs to be gifted and not bought, but to be honest, not everyone is going to have a friend or family member who will give them their first deck.

If you’re wanting to learn the iChing, they do sell iChing coins but all you really need are five coins of one type and one different. (I use 5 pennies and 1 dime).

If you’re wanting to learn runes, one or two good sets of runes

For dowsing, you need a pendulum (you can make one fairly easy but there are plenty to choose from) and you need a mat (either make or buy- it can be paper but they also make cloth) with words like “yes,” “no,” “maybe” etc.

With any method, it’s best to buy at least one guide book to start you out. Some people prefer ebooks but I like normal, paperback books myself. It makes it easier to do readings and the batteries never die. Of course, when you’re studying Tarot, it comes with a book and you will find out quickly that the meanings in the book mean nothing, but it gives a basic understanding while you’re learning.

If you decide you’re not interested in practicing divination, that’s ok. It’s not required but it is useful to know at least one method.

There may be another post like this later, if I find I missed anything. My alter box is mainly set up for candle magick and divination and I covered those. I don’t do herbal or crystal magick too much, I do have a collection of dried herbs, crystals for specific energies and salt (sea and black). I’m in the process of grinding coal to make black sand.

As much as you can gather, dry out and make yourself- the better. The more work you manually put in, the more the alter’s energies will be alligned with yours but if you buy, you can use the 3 day “rule”

For 3 days, carry the tools with you in your pocket. Three nights, sleep with them under your pillow and it should sync your energies up to the tools.

A few miscellaneous items you may also want to add:

1. Athame- double sided knife used in rituals to direct energies

2. wand- once again, used to direct energies and very easy to make (I found a sturdy stick, stripped it down and have been using it for years)

When you go to buy your supplies, it’s best to find the supplies that are calling you. Find the ones that keep you coming back around- even if it’s not the best looking, those are the tools most aligned with you and we hardly choose our tools. Most of the time our tools choose us.

If I missed any tools you have found you need, feel free to comment. We all practice different so what I use may not be what everyone else uses and vice versa.

Pagan Mommy in a Christian World

As long as I can remember, I walked off the normal path. I was always seen as different, strange, and could never fit in when I was a child. I tried wearing the same clothes, listening to the same music, talking with the same slang (slang always made my head hurt) and no matter what I tried, I never could succeed at fitting in.

I have the same issue now that my oldest is in school. I have tried to come up with things to say to start conversations with parents who seem a good ten years older than I am. I have tried to wrack my astrology and tarot obsessed brain to figure out how to start an appropriate, not new-age conversation and my brain fails. I feel like if I mention Bethcessories, I’ll come off as being pushy like a sales rep at a kiosk at the mall. If I mention writing, I’ll be seen as trying to self promote myself too much and if I talk about my tarot and astrology business, I’ll be seen, once again as too much self promotion. It feels like a very fine line.

There also seems to be a bit of a difference between moms who work from home, stay at home or work out of the home so besides the age difference, it feels like I don’t fully fit in with either of the main groups. It may all be in my head, but I’ve attended one or two PTO meetings and only spoke with a few people in the entire time I was there- one was my daughter’s teacher. My daughter was in therapy with one class mate (different therapists but we went at the same time) and I would try to get to know their mom, then I heard her talking to one of the therapists about a church group and it hit me- church groups seem to be how different parents get to know each other. That night, I went on facebook and found one lone Pagan parenting group and another group for all pagans in my state, so I know we exist.

I have another that focuses on gluten/dairy free recipes and normal kid crafts that can be found here. This site is going to be 100% focused on pagan parenting, history, divination and all things New Age. I will post kid friendly ritual and spell ideas you can get kids involved in and around each holiday, I’ll post ways for your child to celebrate.

I am now running a dream interpretation course

I’ll be doing a local in person course later when the Virus pandemic is under control, but until then I’ll be running it online.

It’s going to be close to 12 lessons, lesson 1 won’t be video, it’ll just be the introduction and what to expect.

It’ll be going up around this evening or tomorrow.

I’m aiming each to be around 20-40 minutes with enough information I’m going to have you interpreting your dreams and for your friends, coworkers and family.

I’ve been doing this on Etsy for 3 years, have 1 of a 3 book series published and have been studying and keeping record of my own dreams (and interpreting for friends and family) for over 20 years now.

I was going to charge 20 per lesson but for the introductory price of 50 for the full class, you can sign up here.

Have you ever had a dream you couldn’t stop thinking about?

Have you ever had a dream that you couldn’t stop thinking about? Do you ever wake up and wish you could write it down, go back to sleep and forget half the details?
Have you ever obsessed over what a dream could be telling you but you couldn’t quite figure it out, then you go to the websites and none of the meanings really seemed just quite right? You couldn’t figure out exactly what details you needed to look up and half the details you needed were missing?

I have been studying dream interpretation for over 20 years and I have had so many dreams that I couldn’t place at the time. They had details not listed on the major websites and I just couldn’t get things perfect, so I am in the middle of writing a dream guide. In the guide, I am going into detail how I personally interpret my, my friends and family and customers’ dreams. I have also already published the journal/workbook. There is space to record 35 dreams as well as guided topics with some common theme interpretations.

The workbook is only 10.00 and I can easily be reached on here in the contact area, or on my Etsy.

Dream journal 3

In this workbook, there is a brief introduction to dreams, basics of dream interpretation as well as the definitions of the most common themes.

There is space to record around 35 dreams.

There will be a book coming out before Christmas to go as an educational resource with the book to walk through the steps with an added dream dictionary.

Right now, these books are only 10.00, and if you buy through here or on Etsy, it’s free shipping. They can also be ordered on Lulu.com directly.

I haven’t been on here too much

My personal life has been extremely busy and stressful. I’ll hopfully be getting some exciting and good news soon and if it’s positive, I’ll mention it on here but right now I’m full of nervous energy.

I’m currently working on the actual book to go along with the workbook I just released.

I’ve also gone with some new ideas and decided on the full series I’ll be trying to write by the end of next year. There will be at least 3 books and 3 workbooks with potentially 3 more books and workbooks after. (but not by next year)

I’ve started a new page on Facebook dedicated to the series and education of dream interpretation, astrology (natal chart) and divination.

You can find it here.

Part of the page as well as the Twitter I’m about to start is promotion and updating about the books but mostly it’s sharing facts about the subjects listed above.

It is also going to be lining up with my new site, Astromommy, which is currently under construction.

I’m also working out some plans for DIYmommy and they will be posted when they’re finalized.
