I recently joined a group of readers to read the ARC copies of the very newly released Darkest Desires series. Darkest Desires
This is book 2 in the series, Perfect Poppy written by Casia Pickering
It can be purchased from Amazon, here.
If you’re curious about the series, the Amazon is here.
“Poppy Sears knows what being a survivor means. She experienced the dismantling chaos first hand and saw it haunting her patients. Finding her own way to combat it, Poppy has killed the men who claimed to protect the women they victimized. No matter how much blood she spilled, it isn’t enough to quell her own anxiety. Poppy feels herself splintering and she knows there’s no way out.
Everything about Poppy intrigues Owen Montgomery. She’s smart, gorgeous, and a killer, all the traits he would ever want in a woman. As he learns more about her, watches her at work, he’s more and more convinced that she would be perfect for the clandestine society of serial killers, Mortes Ostium. The problem is, he’s seeing her burning out, an issue too many serial killers succumb to. In an effort to keep her alive and with him, he decides to do the thing he had been preparing himself for: a partnership.”
*Warning- contains references to domestic abuse but also may contain some minor spoilers*

My Review
Since getting the book, I have been unable to put it down willingly. There are parts that make me feel weird- I can’t help but consider Owen to be a massive red flag but I also keep putting myself in Poppy’s POV and I can feel the tension between them as intense as they feel it. Poppy is showing the vengeful side of being a victim of something as serious as domestic abuse, and it even shows the “inner voice” that can happen after escaping an abuser.
The book took me a little while to be able to get through, due to some life changes but once I had a day off with no plans, I was able to sit down and finish it.
It was the kind of book that kept me on edge through most. There were a few parts that felt like I shouldn’t have been rooting for Owen. The first scene where she finally caves in to his advances feels like she was assaulted, but it was what I was waiting to happen. In the end, it was written to feel like he knew what she needed. It may have been, though.
Both of them technically were “monsters” but they were definitely not bad people.
My personal preference for books and movies- less romance with darker themes. This is my first foray into a romance related genre, and I have to admit I am hooked. This book kept me on edge and kept me very interested.
If you like your murder served with spice, you will definitely like this book.
