Guide to Ostara Symbology

Ostara is the celebration of the Spring equinox. Spring is the time to work on magical spring cleaning and cleansing and it’s the time to start planting your garden. Both of those are good rituals to incorporate into your celebrations. When you’re looking to either switch holidays or you’re interested in celebrating for the first time, here is a handy little pocket guide to the symbology of the holiday.

Easter is the Christian holiday symbolizing rebirth and spring

Many of us were brought up in Christian homes growing up and celebrated either the religious aspects of the holidays or the secular versions. If you’re new to the path, or deciding to finally switch from Easter to Ostara, here are some symbols and crossovers to make the switch simple.

Main Symbols

Eggs

Eggs are one of the main crossovers between Easter and Ostara (if you’re switching your family from Easter to Ostara, dying eggs is one of the easiest rituals. You can use the synthetic dyes, find natural dyes in stores or use your own plants and foods to dye the eggs)

Rabbits

Rabbits are well known for their fertility. They come hopping along showing the beginning of spring. If you have kids and they love getting chocolate bunnies in their Easter baskets, this is another tradition you can bring from Easter to Ostara. Rabbits are the symbol of both holidays.

Flowers

Spring is the time to start preplanting seeds, it’s also when earlier flowers are starting to pop up. Flowers like tulips, daffodils, crocuses, violets, heather, and primroses bloom earlier and are symbols of the season.

Butterflies

Just like butterflies transform from a caterpillar to a butterfly, this is the season of change.

Spring Greens

When spring is starting, the trees start to show more green. Green leaves and flowers show the fertility of the season.

Sun

The winter is the darkest time of year. Spring is when the sun is starting to come out more.
